Ear examination

Both ears are examined with an otoscope to confirm wax build-up and check the ear canal before any removal.

Helpful information before you book. Suitability for microsuction is always confirmed after an ear examination.

Should I use olive oil drops before my appointment?

If possible, use olive oil drops two to three times a day for a few days before your appointment. Softened wax is easier and more comfortable to remove, though it isn't essential.

Does microsuction hurt?

Microsuction is generally comfortable and well tolerated. You'll hear some suction noise, and it may feel a little strange, but the clinician works under direct vision and will stop if you feel any discomfort.

Is microsuction safer than syringing?

Microsuction is widely considered the preferred method of wax removal because it uses no water and is performed under direct vision, so the clinician can see the ear canal throughout. Suitability is confirmed at your examination.

What if no wax is found?

If the examination shows no wax build-up, or microsuction isn't appropriate for you, we'll explain why, only charge the examination fee, and advise on the right next step — including referral to your GP where needed.
